Steve Brook, who has had a longtime association with River City (FL) franchise as both as a player and coach, has been named the team’s new manager. Brook was the team’s bench coach and pitching coach previously.

BASEBALL AMERICA HONORS THREE NICK BELMONTE CHOICES ON TOP PROSPECT LIST

Nick Belmonte, superscout for the Independent Leagues, placed three of his signings on the Baseball America Indy Top Prospect List.  At #4 was Ben Paxton, RHP, of Western Kentucky University who played last summer with the Evansville Otters (FL). Paxton went 1-2 in 27 relief appearances with a sparkling 1.12 ERA. At #5 was Tim Brown, RHP, out of Pittsburg State, who was 5-1 with a 2.59 ERA for the Lincoln Saltdogs (AA). And finishing at #9 was Stephen Fox, RHP, of Hofstra who went 0-3 with a 3.98 ERA for the Sussex Skyhawks (Can-Am). Congrats to Nick!

TRYOUT LOCATION AND TIME CHANGED DUE TO WEATHER

The NYSL tryout scheduled for 10 am on Sunday October 18 has been moved indoors because of the possibility of impending bad weather. The tryout will now be held at Frozen Ropes, 300 Executive Boulevard, Elmsford, NY 10523. PLEASE NOTE THE TRYOUT TIME IS NOW – 1 PM. Any questions please call 347-697-5357. This tryout is open only to preregistered players.

BELMONTE IS NAMED NEW CORNBELTER PLAYER DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Nick Belmonte, special advisor to the NYSL, has been named Player Development Director of the new Normal CornBelter franchise in the Frontier League. The move reunites him with manager Hal Lanier with whom he has worked for the past 14 years.

CAREY HEADS SOUTH TO MANAGE IN MEXICAN NORTHERN LEAGUE

Brooks Carey, who served as the pitching coach for the Sussex Skyhawks (Can-Am) for the last two years, will have a new job in 2010. He will manage the San Luis Club of the Mexican Northern League. A former Baltimore Orioles farmhand, Carey has also managed in the New York State League and the Arizona Winter League.

NYSL TO HOLD FALL TRYOUT OCTOBER 18

The New York State League will hold its first tryout for the 2010 season on October 18 at 10am in the NYC metro area. The 2010 season will consist of a 54 game schedule (played from June 7 to August 6). Players MUST pre-register by calling 718-278-4259. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THIS TRYOUT.

LANIER WILL NOT MANAGE SKYHAWKS IN 2010

Hal Lanier, manager of the Sussex Skyhawks for the past two seasons, will not return to lead the team in 2010. Lanier won a Can-Am League Championship in 2008 and had a two year record of 96-99. Lanier has taken a new job as manager of the expansion Normal CornBelters in the Frontier League.

WHIGHAM 2010 OPTION PICKED UP

Dave Whigham, RHP, El Paso (AA), has had the team pick up his 2010 contract option. Whigham was injured last season and suffered a severe skull fracture. Whigham is recovering and is expected to pitch in the 2010 season.
