The 2009 NYSL Championship game was cancelled due to rainy weather in the NYC metro area. The Federals were the declared the 2009 Champions by virtue of their 21-11 regular season record. “It was a shame we didn’t get to play the final one,” Federals Manager Scott Nathanson said, “but we had a great season nonetheless.”

July 30, 2009Sean Gottschalk, RHP, pitched five solid innings of one-run ball to lead Caps over the Feds 9-1. Gottschalk was by followed by four Caps’ relievers who each pitched a scoreless inning. Kyle Obal, DH, led the Caps’ attack with three hits.
MARCHANT GETS WIN
July 29, 2009Seth Marchant, LHP, pitched six scoreless innings to lift the Caps to a 6-0 win over the Feds. Michael Streaman, RHP, (two innings) and Josh Likens, LHP, (one inning) finished off the shutout. The Feds had their worst defensive performance of the season committing six errors.
RIVERHAWKS SIGN BARDEQUEZ
July 28, 2009Alex Bardequez, INF, has been signed by Rockford (FL). Bardequez has played in the American Association and the Can-Am League. He played in the NYSL in 2007.
AQUINO AND HASSETT PACE SWEEP
July 28, 2009Jose Aquino, RHP, and Will Hassett, RHP, both picked up wins for the Feds yesterday as that team pocketed another doubleheader. Aquino found himself on the short end of a 3-2 score until the Feds pushed across nine runsĀ in the top of the sixth and ended up 12-5 winners. In the nightcap, Will Hassett shut the door on the Caps allowing one run over six innings. The Feds took that game too 6-2. Steve Mazzurco had himself a nice day at the plate with four hits and four RBIs.
KUKUCKA NO-NO BROKEN UP BY MAZZURCO
July 28, 2009James Kukucka, RHP, had his no-hitter spoiled with one out in the top of the seventh by a Steven Mazzurco single. The only other baserunners reached on an error amd one was hit by Kukucka, The Caps pitcher was masterful in going the distance; he struck out five and walked none. Inspired by Kukucka’s performance, the Caps rolled to a 6-0 victory in the nightcap. Caps’ pitchers gave up just two hits in that game.
AFFINITO TOP TEN IN AZL
July 26, 2009Chris Affinito, C, Oakland (AZL), is seventh overall in batting in the league. In 22 games he is hitting .346 with four homers and nineteen RBIs. Chris was a 2009 NYSL invitee and a recent graduate of Seton Hall University.
RICE READY FOR HALL
July 26, 2009Today is the day that Jim Ed Rice who played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox will enter the ranks of baseball’s immortals when he is inducted in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. Jim has waited a long time for this honor to come to him and he is richly deserving of it. Congratulations to Jim and all of today’s other inductees.
ADAMS WILL PACK IT IN
July 25, 2009Rob Adams, RHP, a very effective reliever for the Capitols this season, has a sore elbow and will not pitch again this year. Adams will undergo an MRI next week to determine just what is wrong.
SHAFFER BRILLIANT FOR SLIDERS
July 25, 2009Nolan Shaffer, RHP, Midwest (FL), gave his new team eight innings of three hit shutout ball in his debut. He walked four and struck out four. The Sliders held on to win the game 2-0. Shaffer pitched in the NYSL in 2008.
Midwest won the game 2-0.
