OUTFIELDERS SIGN WITH FL, CBL

Dennis Jones, OF, from Michigan State University, who played in the NYSL 2008 season has signed a 2009 contract with the Midwest Sliders (FL). Jones was used primarily as a centerfielder in the NYSL. Eric Morrison, OF, from Duquesne University, has signed an agreement with Texarkana (CBL) for the 2009 season.

NEWARK, OTTAWA TO PLAY IN 2009

The Newark Bears (AL) were purchased out of US Bankruptcy Court and will operate for the full 2009 season. In the Can-Am league the seven other owners voted to fund the operations of the Ottawa team which had gone into receivership at the end of the 2008 season. Good new for baseball fans in Newark and Ottawa!

CHAMPIONSHIP STAFF RETURNS

The Sussex Skyhawks have announced that manager Hal Lanier, coaches Dave Cash and Brooks Carey and director of player personnel Nick Belmonte will all return for the 2009 season. The Skyhawks were the Can-Am League’s 2008 champs.

CARTER IS NEW DUCKS MANAGER

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter has been named the manager of the Long Island Ducks (ATL). Carter, who played for the Mets and the Expos, managed the GBL Orange County Flyers to a championship this past season.

ROSS McCOY NOW A RIVERHAWK

Ross McCoy, OF, who played in the NYSL in 2007, has been traded by the Reno Silver Sox (GBL) to the Rockford Riverhawks (FL). McCoy played his college baseball at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. McCoy joins former NYSL players Jono Brooks, SS, Matt Mazurek, OF, and Joe Dempsey, C, on the Riverhawks roster.

FRONTIER LEAGUE: NO MAPLE BATS

From the Frontier League comes word that no player will be able to use a maple bat in an official game during the 2009 season. The league becomes the first professional league to ban maple bats.
