NEWARK BEARS FILE FOR REORGANIZATION

The Newark Bears of the Atlantic League have filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. This will allow the team to either reorganize its finances or, hopefully, find a buyer.

  • Tom Tresh, former New York Yankees outfielder, has died. Condolences to his son Mickey who played on the independent 1989 Peninsula Pilots of the Carolina League.

CAMPBELL GETS FIRST WINTER LEAGUE WIN

Brian Campbell, RHP, Lincoln Saltdogs (AA), got his first win in the Veracruz Winter League last night for Cafeteros de Cordoba. Campbell went  6.1 innings and gave up eight hits and two earned runs. Campbell pitched in the NYSL in 2007.

Kevin Piccirillo, LHP, Reno (GBL), has been sent to the Lincoln Saltdogs as the player-to-be named later in the June 18 deal that sent Ross McCoy, OF, to Reno. Pic pitched in the NYSL in 2008 and McCoy played in the league in 2007.

WELSH, ACEVEDO, AND PEMBROKE SIGN WITH CBL FOR 2009

Zack Welsh, C, Matt Acevedo, INF, and Ryan Pembroke, INF, have signed contracts with the Continental Baseball League for the 2009 season. The teams these players will be on will be selected later through the Continental League draft.

SLIDERS AT EMU FOR 2009 SEASON

The Midwest Sliders (FL), who spent their entire 2008 season on the road, have a new home for the upcoming season. They will play all their home games at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

MAXWELL SIGNS WITH TEXARKANA

Robert Maxwell, RHP, who was the 2008 SUNYAC Conference Player of the Year  when he played at SUNY-Brockport, has signed with the Texarkana Gunslingers (CBL) for the 2009 season. Robert pitched very effectively in the 2008 NYSL summer season for the New York Federals.

RAPIDZ FOLD

The Ottawa Rapidz (Can-Am) have declared bankruptcy and suspended team operations.  Canadian press reports said the team lost $1 miilion dollars during the 2008 season. Ex-NYSL products Fraser Robinson and Greg Dumouchel played for the Rapidz this season. Reportedly, the league is considering a travel team as one of its options so it will have an even number of teams next year.
