Matt Dahlin pitched five strong innings to lead the Feds over the Caps 5-0. Sam Ytuarte threw two innings of scoreless relief. Cory O’Neill and Dan Bertolini each had two RBIs. The Caps pushed across six runs in the fourth inning of the second game enroute to a 9-6 victory. Peter Moore hit his second home run of the season and Gary Martoccio went two for four. Dylan Rees pitched five shutout innings in the third game as the Feds won 4-1. Brandon Duffy and Fred Duquette finished up. Cory O’Neill added two more RBIs for the Feds in the nightcap.

MATT LEAHY IS NAMED MANAGER OF CAPITOLS
June 30, 2008Matt Leahy, who for five years was the bullpen catcher of the Syracuse Chiefs (Triple A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays), has been named manager of the NYSL Capitols . Matt, a player-coach last year in the NYSL, assisted Sal Licari in running the league’s Herkimer Trailbusters entry. This past winter Matt was a player in the Arizona Winter League.
CZEPIGA SIGNS NYSL CONTRACT
June 30, 2008Dan Czepiga, a left-handed throwing and batting outfielder, has been signed by the NYSL. Dan will play for the Capitols. He is a graduate of the College of New Jersey. He spent spring training this year with the Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League.
NATHANSON IS INDEPENDENT LEAGUE VETERAN
June 29, 2008It was over twenty years ago that Scott Nathanson got his first taste of independent baseball when the great Paul Blair picked him to coach the Long Island Sounds of the Empire State League. Nathanson had earlier coached for Blair at Fordham University in the mid-1980s. Blair and Nathanson teamed up again in 1995 as manager and coach of the Yonkers Hoot Owls of the Northeast League. The following year Nathanson coached for Ken Oberkfell when he managed the Elmira Pioneers of the same league. Oberkfell is presently the first base coach of the NY Mets. With his new job as manager of the NYSL Federals, Nathanson begins his third decade of helping young ballplayers reach their dreams. “I love the first year kids,” said Nathanson. “I’m here to do anything I can to help them on their way.”
AMAR FLOURISHES IN AFFILIATED BALL
June 29, 2008ADAM AMAR, 1B, Auburn (NY-Penn), who became the first NYSL player to sign a contract with a major league organization–in his case the Toronto Blue Jays– is liking his time in upstate New York. Last summer, the big first baseman won a home run hitting contest against the Syracuse Chiefs, the Blue Jays AAA affiliate, while playing for the NYSL. That must have impressed someone in the Blue Jays’ organization as AMAR was signed and spent the first months of his affiliated career in extended spring training. In his first 9 games at Auburn, AMAR has batted .297 with two home runs.

June 29, 2008The Federals prevailed in the first game 7-3. Their luck did not hold in the second game as newcomer Dan Olds failed to record an out in the Caps six run first inning. The final score of the game was 8-2.
THURSDAY RESULTS (June 26)
June 29, 2008The Caps scratched out an 11 inning 7-6 win in the first game. The Feds responded taking the second game 2-1 behind the outstanding pitching of Justin Potes, Nate Ginsberg and John Dobkowski.
OLDS and O’BRIEN SIGNED BY LEAGUE
June 29, 2008Dan Olds, a 6-6, 240 pound righthand pitcher from Northwest Missouri State, has been signed by the NYSL and placed on the Federals roster immediately. Dan O’Brien, a 5-8, 185 pound outfielder from Briarcliffe College, is also being placed on the Federals roster. “As players move to higher leagues,” said Feds manager Scott Nathanson, “we’re very happy to get these two quality guys.”
